Wiener Library

A Center for Archaeological Research, Scholarship, and Discovery

At the heart of the Melathron at Mycenae lies a vision that extends beyond the excavation itself—a place where archaeological discovery is supported by rigorous research, intellectual exchange, and lifelong learning. The Melathron Library is being developed as a premier center for archaeological scholarship, providing students, researchers, educators, and visiting scholars with access to an exceptional collection of academic resources dedicated to the ancient Mediterranean world.

More than a repository of books, the Library represents the Mycenaean Foundation’s commitment to advancing archaeological knowledge through education and research. As one of the largest specialized archaeological libraries in the Greek provinces, it will serve as a hub for scholarly inquiry, international collaboration, and interdisciplinary study, supporting both the Foundation’s research initiatives and the broader academic community.

Housed within the magnificent Wiener Ceremonial Hall, the Melathron Library embodies the Foundation’s mission to preserve the intellectual legacy of the past while inspiring the next generation of archaeologists, historians, and cultural heritage professionals.

Beyond his philanthropy, Dr. Wiener’s encouragement and confidence have been an invaluable source of inspiration to the Foundation and its research teams. His lifelong dedication to archaeology serves as a remarkable example of how vision, scholarship, and generosity can preserve the past while shaping the future of discovery.

The Melathron Digital Library

Expanding Access to Archaeological Knowledge

Complementing the physical collections of the Melathron Library, the Digital Library extends the Foundation’s mission into the digital age by providing broader access to archaeological resources, research materials, and educational content.

Designed as an evolving platform for scholarship and public engagement, the Digital Library will preserve, organize, and share valuable academic resources with researchers, students, educators, and institutions around the world. Through digitization and digital preservation, materials connected to archaeological research, excavations, publications, historical archives, and cultural heritage will become accessible to a global audience.

The Digital Library supports:

  • Digitization and preservation of rare publications and archival materials
  • Online access to archaeological research and educational resources
  • Digital documentation of excavation projects and discoveries
  • Integration of maps, images, databases, GIS resources, and 3D documentation
  • Research collaboration among universities, institutions, and scholars internationally

By combining traditional scholarship with innovative digital technologies, the Melathron Digital Library will create a bridge between past and future—ensuring that archaeological knowledge is preserved, shared, and continuously enriched for generations to come.

Together, the Melathron Library and Digital Library form a comprehensive center for archaeological learning and research, connecting the discoveries of the past with the scholars, students, and communities of tomorrow.

Building a Legacy of Knowledge

Preserving Knowledge, Supporting Discovery

The collections of the Melathron Library represent the intellectual foundation of the Mycenaean Foundation’s commitment to archaeological research, education, and the preservation of cultural heritage. Developed as a specialized research library dedicated to the study of the ancient Aegean and related disciplines, the collection brings together scholarly resources that support excavation, interpretation, teaching, and interdisciplinary investigation.

At the heart of the Library are important personal research collections donated by distinguished archaeologists and scholars, including the libraries of Professor George E. Mylonas and Professor Christofilis Maggidis. These collections preserve decades of archaeological scholarship and provide researchers with valuable resources reflecting generations of academic inquiry into Mycenaean civilization, prehistoric Greece, and the wider Mediterranean world.

Through continued acquisitions, scholarly donations, and partnerships with academic institutions, the Library aims to develop a collection of more than 20,000 volumes, establishing one of the most significant specialized archaeological research libraries outside Athens.

Beyond its role as a repository of knowledge, the Melathron Library serves as a place of collaboration and discovery—supporting researchers preparing field projects, students developing their academic studies, and scholars exploring new interpretations of the ancient world.

The George E. Mylonas Collection

The foundation of the Melathron Library was strengthened through the personal research collection of Professor George E. Mylonas (1898–1988), one of the most influential archaeologists of the twentieth century and a leading authority on Mycenaean civilization.

A distinguished scholar, educator, and excavator, Professor Mylonas dedicated his career to uncovering the history and culture of the prehistoric Aegean. His extensive archaeological work, particularly his landmark excavations at Mycenae, contributed significantly to our understanding of the Mycenaean world and its role in the development of Greek civilization.

His personal library reflects a lifetime of scholarship, containing important works in archaeology, ancient history, classical studies, and related disciplines. Preserving this collection within the Melathron Library ensures that Professor Mylonas’ intellectual legacy continues to support research, education, and the ongoing study of Mycenaean archaeology.

The Christofilis Maggidis Collection

The Melathron Library also incorporates the personal research collection of Professor Christofilis Maggidis, archaeologist, educator, and President of the Mycenaean Foundation. Developed over decades of archaeological research, teaching, and fieldwork, this collection reflects his commitment to advancing the study of Aegean prehistory and promoting innovative approaches to archaeological education.

As the director of archaeological research at Mycenae and Glas, and through his academic career as a professor of archaeology, Professor Maggidis has contributed extensively to the exploration, interpretation, and preservation of Mycenaean cultural heritage. His research library brings together specialized publications and resources that support archaeological investigation, interdisciplinary study, and the training of future generations of scholars.

Together, these two collections form the intellectual foundation of the Melathron Library—connecting the legacy of past archaeological pioneers with the future of research and discovery at Mycenae.

A Growing Collection

The Library continues to expand through the generous support of scholars, academic institutions, archaeological organizations, and publishing houses around the world. Its growing collection includes:

  • Scholarly books and monographs on archaeology, ancient history, and classical studies
  • Academic journals and reference publications
  • Donations from leading archaeologists, researchers, and authors
  • Publications from universities, archaeological schools, museums, and research institutes
  • Specialized resources in archaeology, anthropology, heritage management, conservation, geology, archaeometry, GIS, environmental archaeology, and related disciplines

As the collection continues to grow, the Melathron Library is expected to house more than 20,000 volumes, making it one of the most comprehensive archaeological research libraries outside Athens and an invaluable resource for both Greek and international scholarship.

Supporting Scholarship at Mycenae

Designed to complement the Foundation’s excavation projects, educational programs, and research initiatives, the Melathron Library provides an environment where archaeological investigation continues beyond the field. Here, excavation data are interpreted, publications are consulted, ideas are exchanged, and new discoveries take shape.

Whether preparing for fieldwork, conducting advanced research, developing university courses, or exploring the archaeology of the Aegean for personal enrichment, visitors will find a rich academic environment that encourages inquiry, collaboration, and innovation.

By bringing together knowledge, research, and education under one roof, the Melathron Library stands as a lasting investment in the future of archaeology and the preservation of humanity’s shared cultural heritage.
